Where I live by Eileen Spinelli

url-3Where I Live is a story about Diana, a young girl with a great life: a best friend to play Scrabble with, nice parents who bake brownies and tell jokes, a little sister named Twink to play with, and an interest in astronomy and writing poetry. Then Diana senses from her parents that something’s wrong: she hopes it isn’t divorce. No, it isn’t. Her father has lost his job, her grandfather needs help after an injury, and the family must move across the state to live with Grandpa Joe. As much as she loves her grandfather, she doesn’t want to leave her best friend, the family of wrens nesting in the yard, or her bedroom decorated with astronomy charts. How does the move work out? Will she find a new friend and adjust to living with her grandfather? What will poetry writing have to do with it? This slim book told in free verse (like Love That Dog by Sharon Creech) is an easy read that will leave you feeling that things CAN work out, and change is sometimes a good thing. The black and white softly-shaded illustrations perfectly complement the text and add to the reader’s understanding of the characters’ emotions: I especially like the expressions on the sisters’ faces.

What a sweet book! The simple poems tell a gorgeously woven story of friendship, family, beginnings and endings. The pictures are really pretty as well. It reminds me of Amber was Brave but Essie was Smart, another beautiful book written in poems. Both are great reads!

I agree with your comparison: this book is not as sad but it definitely reminded me of Amber was Brave but Essie was Smart. I think Where I Live will appeal to a younger audience, too.
