Learn Something New project

I started something new in my 4th and 5th grade classes last year:  LEARN SOMETHING NEW day.  I asked each student to take out a nonfiction book that taught them something they didn’t know, and come the next week prepared to share it with the class.  It was a huge success, with over 90% of the students proudly displaying their new knowledge.   Last week I assigned it again to Miss Haines’ 4th graders and Mrs. Keane’s 5th graders.  Here are a few highlights:

Above you see some of Mrs. Keane’s students surrounding Tanner and the go-kart he made with his father.  Nice job!  The kids had a blast scooting around the playground with it.  Of course they wanted to try it down the hill…but we didn’t.

Here are some fun scenes made by Ana and Caroline in Miss Haines’ fourth grade class.  They used an American Girl book called Tiny Treasures, one of my favorites, to make these little scenes.The first one is by Ana, a nice little “sleepover” scene.
